It has been too long since I posted. Part because I have been busy, and part because I am doing some life landscaping. Over the last few months I have had friends move away, some started new jobs, or started dating; I have also gained some new friends and changed how I work and play. After reading Getting Things Done and now reading The Now Habit I started to rethink how I do things. I used to work all the time, I always felt behind like many do; then I realized that there will always be something to do. Since there will always be laundry, dishes, code to write, people to meet with, blogs to write and read, and games to play how do you find balance? How do you get it all done? Well, you can’t; There I said it. I have found that you need to focus on one thing at a time and do it well. Then you can look at your list and pick the next thing. Sometimes how you spend your time is chosen for you, such as meetings and events. Other times you can pick what is best for that moment. The object here is not to pick the fun items and forget the rest, you still have to work though tough spots and take care of the nasty parts of life. But, with GTD or other methods you can set them aside in your mind and deal with them in the “present” and not spend your time worrying about something that can not be done for hours or weeks from now.

Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are — chaff and grain together — certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. -George Eliot (pen name of Mary Ann Evans), novelist (1819-1880) (Thanks to Wordsmith.org)
